Notes
Katie Bell Mooring (pictured at left) was the
daughter of Sallie Trexler and James Franklin Mooring. According to her
nephew:
Kate was the most colorful of the Moorings. She cursed like a sailor,
would kick any man's butt who needed it, and wasn't past taking a nip
for her health. And she drove her old pick-up as fast as it would go on
those gravel roads. And work! She could pitch hay, drive a tractor, bulldog
a hog or yearling, and split wood with the best of them.
Everybody in Witton was afraid of her, uncluding her husband, Uncle Gus.
She got wind one time that Gus was keeping up a woman at the Crow farm,
about a mile way.
She went down there with a pistol, helped that old girl pack her bags,
took her to a crossroads, and told her to be on the next bus to Memphis
or she would shortly be attending her own funeral.
Then she went home and told Uncle Gus that if he wanted to be famous,
then just keep seeing other women and she would make him the only ball-less
farmer in Mississippi County.
An era died with her.
