General Notes:
Lawrence Trexler Deed and Agreement with Adam Trexler, Rowan County Deed Book 29
9 Jan 1808 Lawrence Trexler to Adam Trexler for three hundred Spanish minted dollars the plantation of Lawrence Trexler with the following provisions: Lawrence Trexler is to provide victuals until harvest next, food for his horses until harvest next, two ploughs and geers, horses to help with the work until next harvest, victuals and liquor for the household, nails and “what is belonging to a hand to cover it.” Lawrence is to have a spot of ground for potatoes and tobacco for his own use. His cow will provide milk and butter for Lawrence's use.
Adam Trexler is to give to Lawrence a third of the grain; he is to find ruffage, hay and fodder to feed his horses. He is to give Lawrence liberty and care for him in his old age. Adam is to provide for himself and his family. Adam's wife is to cook, wash and attend Lawrence Trexler. Adam is to pay Lawrence one-fourth of the three hundred dollars every year until the sum is paid.
Lawrence's son Henry is mentioned in this agreement: ..”the said Henry is at home he shall work on the farmer plantation.”
The agreement will become null and void if Adam leaves the plantation, mistreats Lawrence or does not pay the fourths of the sum owing. Signed Lawrence (his mark) Trexler (seal), George Miller (signed in German), Adam (his mark) Trexler and Jacob (his mark) Dillow. Prvd by George Miller 12 May 1828.
Note: Lawrence did not mention his other children in this strangely worded agreement. The agreement suggests that Lawrence did not speak English as his primary language and that neither he nor Adam Trexler could read or write English.
Lawrence Trexler died in Rowan County NC on Sept. 13, 1827. On Monday November 19, 1827, his son, Henry Trexler was granted Letters of Administration.
